Local SEO checklist for home-service businesses
Everything it takes to show up in the Google map pack — in the order that actually works. Free to use and print.
A local SEO checklist is the step-by-step list of everything a home-service business needs to do to show up in Google’s local map pack and local search results. Work through it top to bottom — Google Business Profile first, then your name-address-phone, reviews, website, citations, and tracking — and you turn a business nobody can find into one that gets calls. It is written for the trades: plumbers, electricians, HVAC, roofers, landscapers, and anyone who serves a local area. Print it, tick the boxes, and hand it to whoever runs your marketing. This is a practical guide, not a guarantee of rankings.
1. Google Business Profile (start here)
Your Google Business Profile is the single biggest lever you have, and it is free. Complete every field — a half-filled profile loses to a full one.
- Claim and verify your Google Business Profile for the exact business.
- Pick the right primary category (e.g. “Plumber”) and add relevant secondary categories.
- Set your service area or address exactly the way customers would say it.
- Add complete hours, including holiday hours, and keep them current.
- Upload real photos of your team, trucks, and finished jobs — add new ones monthly.
- Fill in services and products with short, plain-language descriptions.
- Turn on messaging and the “book” or call button so people can reach you in one tap.
- Answer the Q&A section yourself with the questions customers actually ask.
2. NAP consistency (name, address, phone)
Google trusts a business it can verify. If your details differ across the web, that trust erodes.
- Write your NAP one way and use it identically everywhere — exact spelling, spacing, and suffixes.
- Use a local phone number where possible, and the same number on every listing.
- Audit old listings for wrong addresses or disconnected numbers and fix them.
- Match your website footer to the same NAP.
3. Reviews (your prominence engine)
Reviews drive both rankings and the phone calls that follow. The goal is a steady drip, not a one-time push.
- Ask every satisfied customer for a review, in person or by text, the day the job is done.
- Make it one tap with a direct Google review link.
- Respond to every review, good and bad, politely and promptly.
- Aim for a consistent cadence — a few new reviews every week beats a big batch once.
- Never buy or fake reviews — it risks your whole profile.
4. Website: service and city pages
Your website tells Google what you do and where. One thin homepage is not enough.
- Create one page per core service (e.g. “Drain Cleaning”), each genuinely helpful.
- Create a page per city or area you serve, with real local detail — not copy-paste.
- Write clear title tags in the form “Service in City | Business”.
- Add LocalBusiness schema with your NAP, hours, and service area.
- Put your phone number in the header on every page, tap-to-call on mobile.
- Make sure the site is fast and mobile-friendly — most local searches are on a phone.
5. Citations and directories
Consistent listings on trusted sites reinforce that your business is real and established.
- List in the core directories — Google, Bing Places, Apple Maps, Yelp, Facebook.
- Add industry and local directories (trade associations, chamber of commerce, local guides).
- Keep every citation NAP-identical to your profile.
- Skip low-quality spam directories — a few good ones beat a hundred junk ones.
6. Content and local links
Helpful content earns links and answers the questions your customers search before they call.
- Publish practical guides that answer real customer questions (see our local SEO guide by trade).
- Earn local links — sponsor a team, join local groups, get listed by suppliers.
- Link your own pages together so services, city pages, and guides support each other.
7. Track what matters
You cannot improve what you do not measure. Check these monthly.
- Google Business Profile insights — calls, direction requests, and searches.
- GA4 for website visitors and where they come from.
- Call tracking so you know which calls came from search.
- Map-pack rank for your top “service + city” terms.
